How To Change The Frequency On Your Remote Control Car
How To Change The Frequency On Your Remote Control Car?

How To Change The Frequency On Your Remote Control Car?

Last Updated On March 6, 2024 By Howard

Setting radio frequency first and the frequent question that came to mind when you are trying to operate multiple control cars at the same time. If you are trying to operate two remote control cars at the same frequency, you will operate them all at the same time.  That is why you need to know the tricks of changing the frequency of the remote control car.

Now the problem is how will you change the frequency of your remote control car. Some of them can be changed with Remote Control crystal sets.  You will find these crystal sets in your nearest electronics shops or remote control super shops. In a crystal set, in both the receiver board and remote control, you will be able to exchange the frequency. Some high-featured toy cars, it has built-in frequency-changing options.

How Does Radio Control Work?

How Does Radio Control Work

To learn how to change the frequency of a remote control car, first of all, you need to know how a Radio Control works. Radio control is used to control remotely several tiny motorized toys like remote control cars.

These toys are operated based on four components and they are:

Radio Transmitter:

A radio transmitter is an electronic circuit that transforms electric power from a battery or other source into a radio frequency connecting with an antenna. This antenna radiates the energy as radio waves.

Radio Receiver:

The radio receiver is located in the remote control device, it receives a signal from the remote and passes the signal to the vehicle’s motor.

Remote-controlled Motor:

The remote control motor is one of the main parts of the toy that operates the toy properly by delivering commands produced from the electricity.

Power Source:

The power source is the main source of energy to operate the toy without any interruption. It is operated with a battery that can be rechargeable or not while the remote control car is operated with electricity or fuel.

What Frequency Do Remote Control Cars Use?

What Frequency Do Remote Control Cars Use

Most of the remote control cars operate on 27 MHz or 49 MHz. These two frequencies have been developed by the Federal Communications Commission. These frequencies are dedicated to small appliances like remote control toys, lighting toys, etc.

Few specialized Remote Control models run at 72MHz or 75MHz, but they are more complex and rarer than the Remote Control cars that most hobbyists would be introduced to.

There are some technologically advanced models of remote control cars that operate at 72MHz or 75MHz. These types of remote control cars are so rare.
All of the remote control cars are operated on a standard radio frequency because if they are operated from a different frequency, it can conflict with the signal that is used in TV, wireless radio, and other communication mediums. This situation of changing frequency can cause serious potential damage to valuable electric devices.

This is why, before changing the frequency of the remote make sure it complies according to the regulations of the FCC.

What Techniques Do You Need To Apply To Make A Change In The Frequency Of A Remote Control Car?

If you are operating two control cars on the same frequency and then you find that the operation of these two cars is impossible, you don’t need to perform any serious modifications to the remotes or the vehicles.  Some of the remote controls are designed with chosen bands, which ensures that they can be controlled on various frequencies within the scope of 27MHz.  Here we are mentioning some generally accepted bands that are usually used in the USA for control vehicles:

  • 995 (Channel 1)
  • 045 (Channel 2)
  • 095 (Channel 3)
  • 145 (Channel 4)
  • 195 (Channel 5)
  • 255 (Channel 6)

You will be able to change the frequency of the car from a dedicated channel to a different channel in these selected bands. The cars will not conflict with one another since they are operated on different channels within the 27MHz frequency range.

How To Modify The Frequency Of Remote Control Cars?

How To Modify The Frequency Of Remote Control Cars

Changing the frequency of your Remote Control toy radio signal becomes important when several vehicles are working in the same area since certain signals can interfere with each other. Many Remote Control toys come fitted with two radio frequencies to pick from, but there are occasions when the included frequencies are not adequate to prevent interference issues. For those times, you’ll have to do a bit more to change the frequency of your Remote Control toy than flip a switch.

Purchase a crystal collection from a hobby store online or nearby. Be sure that the crystal package is a full set of crystals for the transmitter and receiver, and that it is functional from your special transmitter and receiver device. To reach the remote control receiver, open your Remote Control car. You can unlock most of the vehicles by cutting a series of clips that attach the body of the vehicle to the chassis. Some would cause you to unscrew your body first before extracting it. Typically a Phillips head screwdriver is necessary.

Place and remove the existing frequency crystal from the receiver, and slip it out from the receiver set. The crystal will have a tab attached to a small metal body that connects two tiny prongs with the receiver. Locate the fresh crystal in the receiver and plug it into two small holes. The crystal in the set should be named “Rx” to indicate that it is the required receiver crystal. Replace the chassis of the vehicle. With a screwdriver, break the case of the remote control radio transmitter. Place a new crystal that is called “Tx” for the transmitter crystal with the transmitter. Replace the transmitter condition. Is Radio Frequency Changing Safe in Remote Control Cars?

Until or unless you are uneducated about radio frequency, it will make you scared about the whole process of changing the frequency. Read the mentioned tips carefully, it will be as simple as pouring water into a glass.

Can You Operate Two 2.4 GHz Remote Control Cars At The Same Time?

Gigahertz is another frequency that is used to operate a remote control car instead of the MHz range. GHz range is more convenient to use rather than MHz.
Here, we are mentioning two major beneficial factors of using GHz frequency over MHz frequency:

Range:
Remote control using GHz frequency receives a better signal from a long distance over an MHz frequency remote control. It is one of the core beneficial factors of using GHz frequency.

Reduced interference:

In GHz frequency, there is less chance to make conflict with another remote control system as there is less chatter on the GHz frequency channel.

Remote control operating on a 2.4 GHz frequency channel has less chance to interface with other radio wave devices. Because the GHz transmitter is designed in a fine way to avoid such types of collision with other devices.

Before Trying To Change Remote Control Channels, Have An Idea Of What You Do.

In a commercially made remote control vehicle, adjusting the frequency channel is as easy as flipping the selector switch.
